Why mammogram screening matters?
Breast cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers among women in Ontario. The good news? Early detection through regular mammogram screening can help identify changes before symptoms appear—improving the chances of successful treatment and survival.
At GAM Diagnostic Imaging, in partnership with the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) we make mammogram screening accessible, comfortable, and free for eligible women.
Who is eligible for OBSP screening in 2026?
Under the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), eligibility is based on age and health history:
- Ages 40 to 74: Eligible for free screening every 2 years, even without a doctor’s referral.
- Ages 40 to 49: Eligible for screening. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk factors to determine the best screening schedule for you.
- Ages 30 to 69 (High Risk): Women at high risk (e.g., strong family history, genetic factors like BRCA mutations) may qualify for earlier and more frequent screening.
- Ages Over 74: You can continue screening with a doctor’s referral if you choose.
If you’re unsure about your eligibility, our team can guide you through the process.
How often should you get a mammogram?
- The OBSP recommends screening every 2 years for women ages 40 to 74.
- For women with higher risk, screenings may be done annually or as advised by your physician.
- Even if you have no symptoms, staying consistent with your mammogram schedule is key to early detection.
What to expect during your appointment?
We understand that many women feel anxious before their first mammogram. Here’s what you can expect when visiting GAM Diagnostic Imaging:
- Comfortable environment: Our friendly technologists ensure your experience is as easy and stress-free as possible.
- Quick procedure: The screening usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Brief discomfort: The breast is gently compressed between two plates to capture clear X-ray images. While you may feel pressure for a few seconds, it’s brief and necessary for accurate results.
- Fast results: Your images are interpreted by specialized radiologists, and results are sent to you or your doctor promptly.
We prioritize privacy, professionalism, and care in every step of your screening.
Preparing for your mammogram
- Wear a two-piece outfit for easier undressing.
- Avoid wearing deodorant, powder, or lotion on your chest area on the day of your appointment, as these can interfere with the images.
- Bring your health card and any previous mammogram results if available.
